The photos above are the final applications of my combination mark for the 2036 Olympics for the bid cities of Chengdu and Chongqing.

RESEARCH
The first step in my process was researching the cities as well as past logos and similar events.
I researched:
• the history of the Olympics
• the two cities of Chengdu & Chongqing
• previous Olympic logos
• other similar event logos
• previous venues & merchandise
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
My sketching and concepting stages had lots of overlap and each stage was revisted multiple times.
This diagram provides a broad overview of my concept and logo development.
The section titled rough represents this original first three logos I was deciding between.
In the process of iterating these logos, I developed a completely new logo concept from one of my original sketches that I revisited.
This concept evolved into my final combination mark!
REFINEMENTS
Throughout refinements, I explored many different type combinations and color schemes. In the abstract figure design, I noticed the negative space slightly resembled the number “6” so I adjusted it to make it more obvious to be a hidden feature in pair with the “2036.”
(SPOILER: I didn't even end up going with this design in the end)
One of my biggest struggles in this project was deciding which of my concepts was the right direction to take. By exploring how each would function in different layouts, I was eventually able to pinpoint which design was the strongest and most flexible.

FINAL CONCEPT
Color: In Chinese culture red is used to represent luck, joy, and happiness, so the solid red applied to the mark captures this symbolism.
Mark: The design takes inspiration from the Chinese knot known to symbolize good luck as well as longevity and eternity, perfect to reflect the Olympic spirit.
Logo: The chosen font reflects the character of the old cities of Chengdu & Chongqing and mimics the architectural structures.
